The School of Vocational Education, established in 1999, is one of the top schools in Federal College of Education(Technical) Akoka operating from commercial centre of the nation in Lagos. The School has produced the biggest names in Vocational Education. We place higher premium on education and industries which is clearly visible in the numbers of farms, laboratories, studios, kitchens and several other ongoing projects in the School. The training of students in different departments in the School of Vocational Education takes place in context of education and industry practices which easily transform NCE graduates into professional teachers and entrepreneurs after graduating. We are proud to give students vocational skills that make them compete with the best in the world. In this era of globalization, critical thinking, team work and multidisciplinary emphasis are adopted in teaching and training of students for global competition.The School of Vocational Education of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, Lagos, consists of three departments: Agricultural Education, Fine and Applied Arts Education and Home Economics Education.
Our Focus
We are highly qualitative, academic-oriented, research driven and student-centered school, committed to creating an innovative teaching and learning environment. We have a dual focus of teaching and training students toward entrepreneurship vocation. Our teaching and research farms, laboratory studios are well equipped with modern state of art facilities manned by highly experienced technologist and Technicians; all to the advantage of our students. The departments collaborate and partner with private sectors in the provision of teaching infrastructure and practical training of students. School of Vocational Education produce well qualified NCE graduates who teach vocational subjects; develop vocational skill; and gain entrepreneurial skill for National Development. The curriculum stipulates 3–year programme and incorporates compulsory four months of Students Industrial Work Experience (SIWES) and six months of Teaching Practice (TP). Vocational Education programme is intensive and courses are assessed continuously with students’ academic performance closely monitored because course materials are handled and presented in smaller doses and examined in greater depth. All the programmes in the School of Vocational Education are accredited by National Commission of Colleges of Education (NCCE). Entry into any department of the programme depends on:
ª Success in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or their equivalent with five credits in English Language, Mathematics and any relevant three subjects in each department.
ª Successful candidate are also required to have acceptable level of performance in the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) administered by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Overview of Agricultural Education Department
Agricultural Education Department started as a Unit under the then School of Science in May 3rd, 1993 with a staff strength of three (3) lecturers. By 1994, it became a full fledge Department with more lecturers recruited to handle many emerging courses. Presently, the staff strength comprises 12 Academic staff distributed into the five major units of the Department namely: Agricultural Economics and Extension; Crop Protection; Environmental Biology; Crop/Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering. The Department offers both Degree and NCE programmes in Agricultural Education. While the Degree programme spans a period of four (4) sessions, the NCE programme is for three (3) Sessions. Candidates with Intermediate Certificates such as OND, NCE and HND are offered direct entry admission to 200 level. The urban/metro-like nature of the campus does not preclude the campus from having necessary farm practical facilities. Hence, the Department is replete with vital practical equipment/tools such as Tractor and other implements, poultry unit, Fish pond, arable crop land, laboratories, etc. On top of this, is the availability of qualified academic and Non-teaching staff of which credentials are listed in the following paragraph.

Philosophy of Agricultural Education
The philosophy of NCE Agricultural Education program is tied with the national philosophy on Agriculture for self-reliance based on the provision of teachers endowed with a balanced approach between principles and practice of Agriculture for academic and Vocational ends.
Objectives of Agricultural Education
The objectives of the program shall be:
v To prepare graduates with the right attitude and knowledge/professional competence in vocational agriculture:
v To produce teachers who will be capable of motivating students to acquire interest in and aptitude for agriculture:
v To develop in the student-teachers the appropriate communicative skills for effective transmission of agricultural information and skills to the students in the context of their environment:
v To equip the student-teachers with adequate knowledge and ability to establish and manage a model school farm effectively:
v To provide a sound background that enhances further academic and professional progression of the student-teachers.
Admission Requirements of Agricultural Education
Students seeking admission into NCE Agricultural Education program should possess any of the following qualifications:
a) Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or G.C.E or NECO‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings.
b) A Grade II Teachers’ Certificate (TC II) with Credit or Merit in four subjects. Credit/Merit in Agricultural Science, and General Science or Integrated Science are required.
c) Associateship Certificate in Education awarded by an approved institution in Nigeria or abroad is also acceptable as qualification.
d) Candidates seeking admission into NCE (Agricultural Education) program with SSC/NECO result must have Credits in Biology or Agricultural Science and a pass in Chemistry.
e) Candidates with TC II Certificates must have Credit or Merit passes in General Science/Integrated Science and Agricultural Science.
f) All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must enroll for and write the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) administered by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Mode of Teaching
The mode of teaching of Agricultural Education courses is by lectures, tutorials, field trips, excursions, practicum, laboratory work, information and communication technology and practical as deemed appropriate for each course.
Mode of Assessment
Mode of assessment in Agricultural Education will be 60 percent examination and 40 percent continuous assessment except in practical courses where 60 percent of the marks will be earned through field practical work and 40 percent for written examination.

Every student is required to present a seminar in either agriculture or education and the credit earned recorded as AGE 320

Agricultural Education is a Double Major subject and is offered on its own not in combination with any other subject.

FINE AND APPLIED ARTS DEPARTMENT
Overview of the Department
Fine and Applied Arts Education Department took off in Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka in 1991/1992 Academic Session. The department was a unit under School of Education at that time. It took off with four (4) Lecturers:
- One (1) Full-Time Lecturer (then the Dean, School of Education) (Mr. Shonde);
- Two (2) Youth Corpers (Mr. Obasi, Austine and Mr. Obiora, Okonkwo);
- One (1) Part-Time Lecturer (Mr. Dan Ifeagwu).
The four (4) Lecturers taught all the courses in the department until the arrival of three (3) other Lecturers in 1992/1993 Academic Session (Dr. E.O. Filani, Mr. Bankole Ojo now a Professor in a University, and Mrs. Akatakpo, E. F. O.). The department started with about twenty-two (22) Students out of which about fifteen (15) of them graduated in the year 1995. The department at a point was moved to the School of Technical Education and later joined to form School of Vocational Education alongside the departments of Agricultural Education and Home Economics Education. Dr. E. O. Filani was the first H.O.D of the Department. Fine and Applied Arts Department has grown in the College and has produced many talented Artists who are contributing to the development of Education within and outside the shore of Nigeria. The department now offers NCE and Degree programmes and the department are blessed with seasoned academics/artist and some non-teaching staff whose credentials are listed below:

Philosophy of Fine and Applied Arts Education
The philosophy of this programme is to provide academic and professional training for NCE Teachers in Fine and Applied Arts. It aims at developing student’s aesthetic perception, artistic talents and expression as well as stimulates interest and enquires in the practical and theoretical areas, particularly as they affect the teaching of art at the primary and junior secondary schools levels.
Objectives of Fine and Applied Arts Education
The programme objectives are As follows:-
v Training professional art teachers to fill the manpower needs of the primary and junior secondary schools;
v equipping and providing the teachers with knowledge, understanding and skills in Fine and Applied Arts;
v equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills for the promotion of Nigerian and world’s artistic and cultural heritage;
v developing in the would-be teachers the ability to communicate effectively through the arts;
v preparing teachers to qualify for and benefit from teacher education at the University level; and
v equipping NCE graduates with manipulative skills which will make them self-reliant job creators
General Admission Requirements
Students seeking admission into NCE Fine and Applied Arts Education programme should possess any of the following qualifications:
a) Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or G.C.E or NECO ‘O’ Level with credits in five (5) subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings
b) A Grade II Teachers’ Certificate (TC II) with Credit or Merit in three subjects, two of which must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer Credit/merit in English Language and/ or Mathematics may be a requirement in some courses.
c) For Candidates wishing to offer courses in Vocational and Technical Education, R.S.A. or City and Guilds intermediate certificate and the Federal Craft Training Certificate with credit/merit in at least four subjects, are acceptable qualifications.
d) Associate ship Certificate in Education awarded by an approved Institution in Nigeria or abroad, is also acceptable as qualification.

Mode of Teaching
The practical and theoretical nature of Fine and Applied Arts necessitate the use of different teaching strategies by an art teacher. The following teaching strategies are used by Lecturers: – Lecture, Demonstration, Tutorial and other creative methods e.g. Multi-grade Instruction in Art History. Art Education and practical lessons are taught by lecture, demonstration and tutorial methods. Appropriate teaching aids, e.g. pictorial reproduction, photographs, slides, film strips, are used where necessary. In sculpture, graphics, textiles, painting, ceramics and drawings classes, demonstration and other creative methods are effectively used to arouse and sustain students’ interest. Excursions and field trips are compulsory for all students before graduation.

Display and Exhibition
Every student is required to present a seminar in different areas of Fine and Applied Art Education, and the credit earned recorded as FAA 320
Research Project

Overview of the Department
Home Economics is both a body of theoretical knowledge based on exact sciences and humanities, and forms of practice, based up by appropriate technologies. Its area of activity includes the use and management of human and material resources for greater welfare of individuals in any nation, families and human society in its entirety. Home Economics Education strives to solve the most pressing problems of the present as well as those of the future. It is therefore committed to sustainable development. Home Economics Education is expected to help individuals and families solve the enormous problems that confront them including inter – alia those relating to child rearing, family, nutrition, health, shelter, clothing and management of family resources to meet family goals among others. Home Economics Education is the bedrock of all other professions in building a happy and comfortable life.

Philosophy of Home Economics Education
The philosophy of Home Economics Education borders on the improvement of the quality of life of the individual and family, by equipping them with relevant knowledge, attitude and skills for productive and effective life. It focuses on effective development and utilization of resources for meeting goals. It identifies and classifies the roles, aspiration and abilities of each family member as well as determines strategies towards achieving them. It equips individuals for entrepreneurship. Home Economics Education is a field of knowledge which draws information and skills from core subject areas of the art, science, humanities and other related subjects: through awareness programme, workshops, seminars, conferences, formal teaching and research.
Objectives of Home Economics Education
The objectives of the programme are to:
v Train Home Economics teachers with a sound basis for professional growth and personal development in Home Economics who will:
a) Exhibit thorough knowledge of job skill and career opportunity in Home Economics Education
b) Equip students with entrepreneurial skill for self employment and self-reliance
c) Demonstrate positive human relationship and ability to work with people from diverse socio-cultural background
v Prepare teachers for a post NCE degree programme in Home Economics Education
v To teach and guide learners to develop behavior patterns, skills, appreciation, knowledge and abilities that will enable them fulfill their parts as family members.
General Admission Requirements
a) A minimum of five (5) credits including English and Mathematics (to be obtained at a maximum of 2 sitting) and the other 3 of the related areas like Food and Nutrition, Home Management, Clothing and Textile, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Fine and Applied Arts, Agricultural Science, Health Science, Physical and Health Education and Integrated Science
b) For candidates wishing to offer courses in Vocational and Technical Education, NABTEB with RSA or City and Guilds Intermediates Certificate coupled with the Federal Craft Training Certificate credit/merit in at least 4 relevant subjects are also acceptable for qualification
c) A Grade II Teacher Certificate (TCII) with credit passes in any of the three (3) subjects listed above.
d) Certificate in catering, technology and textile design. Candidates must have gone through Post Primary Education level with a pass in English and credit in any of the two (2) subjects listed above
e) Associate-ship Certificate in Education awarded by an approved institution in Nigeria or abroad is also acceptable as qualification
f) All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must enroll for and write the Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) administered by Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Mode of Teaching
a) Practical work in well-equipped laboratory is essential in all Home Economics subject areas for proper development of necessary skills
b) For both theoretical and practical lesson, variety of methods will be used.

Teaching Practice
Every student is required to do Teaching Practice, and the credit earned recorded as EDU 311.
Seminar
Every student is required to present a seminar in any area of Home Economics Education, and the credit earned recorded as HEC 325
Research Project
Every student is required to undertake, write and submit research project at 300 level in Home Economics Education related areas and the credits earned recorded as EDU 323.
Subject Combination
Home Economics Education is a Double Major subject and is offered on its own not in combination with any other subject.
